EJ-301 and EJ-309 are liquid scintillators for neutron and gamma pulse shape discrimination (PSD). EJ-309 is specially formulated with a high flash point. The stability of each liquid in the presence of other materials should be determined before a large amount of liquid is committed. After being transferred to a cell or tank the scintillator should be deoxygenated by sparging with pure nitrogen or argon for a duration of time proportional to the cell size immediately before sealing in order to achieve excellent PSD performance.

It is identical to the widely reported NE-213 and exhibits all of the properties of that scintillator. EJ-309 has been developed as an alternate to the more commonly used low-flash point PSD liquid scintillators based on the solvent xylene.

INTRODUCTION. An organic liquid scintillator, such as NE213 and BC501A, is widely used for neutron spectrum measurement behind a shield by coupling with the unfolding technique, because it has a high detection efficiency, good neutron–photon discrimination performance and comparably good energy resolution.
